August of 1945 heralded the beginning of a new era in warfare, the introduction of the atomic bomb. The strikes against Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while it was hoped they would cause Japan to surrender to surrender and end the war, the expectation was that they would continue to fight.
When someone discusses alternate history regarding World War II it usually takes the form of what if Germany had invaded Britain through Operation Sea Lion or if the Japanese had not bombed Pearl Harbor or any other number of compelling scenarios.
